Election Day

Tuesday is an exciting day for our country--we will get to vote for the next President of the United States!  In class, we will be holding our own mock election and discussing some of the big issues of the campaign.

If you want to find out more about the two candidates and the election process, here are some great websites to check out:

Walking Trip to the Invisible Dog

Last Monday, Class 3-207 took a special community walk for Project Lab.  We went with Bee to the Invisible Dog Art Gallery to meet one of her brothers who is an artist!  He showed us some of his work, including the industrial rose gardens, which are made from old buttons and pins from a belt factory.  Then we got to help with a new collaborative art project by scrolling old belts together.  It was a fun way to spend our Monday afternoon!

It's hard to believe that we are almost finished with our second month of school!  We have been very busy, and so far third grade has been lots of fun.  Take a look at what we've been up to...

We have chess each Friday with Mr. Nick.  We like to practice our tactics during choice.

story book character parade

Class 3-207 in Carroll Park

Today we had the story book character parade. It was epic! Two of us were Greek goddesses, three of us were characters from Harry Potter, Jonathan was a character from Lord of the Rings, two of us were Tintin, and there were a lot more FABULOUS costumes. Niko was Super Dipper Baby and Jacob was Captain Underpants.  Sofia and Elizabeth were dressed as Clementine. I don't think anyone will forget today!

A special thank you to all the parents who made our parade and celebration such a success!  We had a great time!

Week 1: Choice Time Update

Class 207 has rules. One important rule is treating each other kindly.
One other is listening to the directions and trying our best.
We all wanted a great year so we came up with things we could do.
Today we did our birthday chart and signed the rules.
We're all making new friends and seeing old friends.
This is going to be a great year!

We love third grade!

Third Grade will be a HOOT!

We started a brand-new school year this week, and so far things are going great!  Class 3-207 has spent the last two days getting to know each other, talking about our hopes for this year and learning all the routines and procedures of third grade.   We have done a fantastic job of treating each other with kindness and respect, and LOTS of teachers have given our class compliments--even Ms. McGee!  We are so excited about all the adventures we will have this year!

Investigations Math Curriculum

This year, P.S. 58 will be working with a brand new math curriculum: Investigations!

We will grow as mathematicians this year as we explore place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, data analysis, geometry, patterns and measurement.  This program will deepen our problem solving skills and ability to explain our math thinking and is better aligned with the Common Core Standards.  For more information about the new curriculum, you can visit the Terc website.

Adopt a Classroom

The third grade classes are trying a new--and hopefully easier--approach to school supplies this year. Instead of each student bringing supplies individually, we are asking families to contribute to our site on adoptaclassroom.org.  There is no minimum amount, but please consider donating what you typically spend on supplies ($50-$75 per  child) so we can begin the year with a well-stocked classroom.

You can find the site for Class 3-207 here.

Additionally, we are asking students to bring some supplies on the first day of school.  Please bring the following on September 6:

  • 5 Marble composition notebooks labeled with student's name
  • 1 durable homework folder labeled with student's name
  • At least 1 package of sharpened #2 pencils (Ticonderoga or Dixon preferred)

Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank you for your generosity!

Welcome to our class blog!

Hi third graders,

We hope you all are having a terrific summer!  Can you believe we are less than a month away from the first day of school?  We have such an exciting year ahead, and we couldn't wait until September to start our class blog.  We'll update this page throughout the year to share all the great work we are doing in Room 207, so visit often!

Can't wait to see you all soon!

Love,
Mrs. Vanegas & Ms. Rippe
